Councilwoman Sharon P. Scott’s Message to the Voters

It has been an honor and privilege to serve the citizens of Newport News as a member of City Council from 2002 until the present.  The experience has been both educational and humbling.  My satisfaction from serving stakeholders in our city has come from the citizens’ appreciation of my voice on Council.  They know they can count on me.

As a community and city, we have grown and prospered. I appreciate the opportunity to be involved in the process of making Newport News One City.  While our city is stable with a Good credit rating, there are challenges that need to be addressed.  It is going to take a seasoned, concerned and energetic advocate to keep the momentum going.

Even though I have seen a lot of progress during my 16-year tenure on Council, we still face challenges of ensuring that our children receive a quality education which prepares them to enter the workforce or seek higher education. Transportation continues to be a point of contention as we seek to mitigate congestion.  Our continued economic development efforts require strong, steady, experienced hands at the helm to augment current economic engines.

Citizens in the North District, and across the city have asked me to continue to be their voice on Council to help ensure the legacy of One City One Vision. To continue to be a faithful, energetic servant of the City, I need your support and resources to ensure my success.  My campaign needs to carry forth a message to the voters that there is work to be done. I am offering myself as the best person for the tasks that lie ahead.

I hope I can continue to count on your support for the May 1st election.  Together, we can make Newport News a city of opportunity, with a focus on issues that make our city a destination for people to live, work and raise a family. It is imperative that we make Newport News a destination for businesses seeking a home and a bright future.  As a team, we can address the needs of the citizens, businesses and ensure our city’s vitality.
